Course Description

Peer Support: A Culturally Competent Look at the Seasons of Law Enforcement was developed in the POST Master Instructor Certification Course and the content was guided by state-wide surveys and subject matter expert interviews, which identified needs in the area of peer support training. 

This course will provide public safety peer support team members a review of the basic knowledge and skills necessary to provide support, guidance and resources to their peers during difficult times in their personal and professional lives. Students will examine the impact of cultural competency, be introduced the concept of proactive peer support and explore the effective application of peer support during the various seasons of a career. Topics will include, but are not limited to: sources of stress, peer support roles, common barriers, peer support skills, communication, active listening, setting boundaries, developing mentors, cultural competency, examining bias, politics orientation, unique stressors in the three phases of a career, critical & large-scale incidents, secondary trauma, compassion fatigue, supporting peer support personnel and programs. This course meets the requirements of AB 1117 for confidentiality and meets the IACP Peer Support Guidelines.
